The Mayan societies disappeared from this planet centuries ago. Today few people have any knowledge or understanding of who the Mayans were or what they left behind. Mayans possessed an extreme knowledge of the solar system and the cycles that control it. As a result of this knowledge they created twenty two calendars. The calendars were used to mark time, of course, but were also created for another reason. Calendars created by the Mayans also documented prophesy and changes in our social structure. Many people are talking about prophesy and the Mayan calendar today. Let us take a look at why that is happening.
The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. This is causing many people to panic and doomsday scenarios abound about the end of the world. Others, though, believe a different interpretation of what it all means. Those who are not building underground shelters and stocking up food for the end of time, have another understanding.
We must begin with the understanding the Mayans had of the universe in order to understand what they meant with the prophesies and the calendar. The last date was described by the Mayans to mean a time when much change will take place and societies would evolve. This called upon a time for societies to stop destructive ways of life and gravitate in a different direction toward a peaceful existence. The beginning of that process was to start in 1999. It was predicted to continue for 13 years until the last day on the calendar.
Mayan beliefs explained processes in the universe. These processes are said to be fixed, and the only thing that changes are the attitudes and behaviors of humans who live in these times. If attitudes and behaviors do not change, then it was predicted that a cataclysm could indeed take place during this time of transition. It is up to us in the human race to embrace the changes we need to make in order to avert total disaster.
With this interpretation one can see that 2012 can be a time of moving forward in a very positive way, and not the doomsday nightmare that many believe. It could be a time of creating societies that are more productive and peaceful than in the past. It is a time for all of mankind to benefit from a positive change.
The prophesies left behind by the Mayans are certainly worth examining. The accuracy is hard to dispute by most people who decide to study them. The first prediction made in the prophesies dealt with the human race destroying the environment. It came at a time on the calendar when the affects or global warming were beginning to be understood. Mayan knowledge was mysterious and beyond even their own time in history.
The Mayans also predicted the start of a period of change around 1999. Starting in that year the human race was called upon to take a close look at what we believe and how we behave. Relationships were meant to evolve and change and we were to release our fears.
Beliefs in prophesy and the Mayan calendar vary from one extreme to another. You will have to decide for yourself what your own belief is. But one thing is certain, Mayan culture is just as relevant today as it was when that passed along their knowledge centuries ago.
